This social housing project for Clúid Housing is an interesting combination of extensive refurbishment of an existing single storey 19th century terraced house, with three new houses behind, all in an Architectural Conservation Area. The site for the new build terrace is located to the rear of the existing street terrace in the combined lands of two adjacent houses. An existing lane between the two houses provides access to the new build terrace beyond.
The scheme provides a respectful contemporary solution to the challenge of development in a low-rise historical context.
The new build terrace is single story and each house has a mono-pitch roof profile. The distinctive repeating rhythm gives each house its own identity, frames the front door, and provides a south-facing roof for PV panels. The roofs are careful not to project above the ridgeline of no.20-22 College Street to minimise impact on the Architectural Conservation Area. The ambition for the project was to ensure that the new properties knit seamlessly into this well-established suburban community, whilst providing much-needed new social housing.
